Last week I took a quick vacation to London.. I didn't touch my music at all.. I only heard one rap song the entire time I was there - it was great!! I returned with a clear mind and feeling very refreshed.. I wanted to share a little bit of what I heard in London.. This is Kasabian, a British indie rock band.. The song Take Aim is off their latest album West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum.. The sound is both guttural and ethereal.. I took the verses from Birdman's I Want It All single with Lil Wayne and Kevin Rudolf and used the contrasting sound with Birdman and Weezy's verses.. Pretty simple blend, but the effect is dramatic..

Sometimes I start a project having a clear vision of what I want done and how to go about doing it.. Other times, it's just a whirlwind of imagination, creativity, and luck.. 'John Luda Mellencamp' is one of these lucky bastard projects.. I can't even begin to tell you where I got the idea from, or at what point I wanted to make a video for it.. I remember swearing to myself I wouldn't flood the market with another 'How Low' remix.. I remember organizing my '90s crate and coming across 'Wild Night'.. After that is a blur.. I do know that the 'Wild Night' video matches up with the lyrics of 'How Low', and I also know that Shana Zadrick was killin it in that video.. Although I can't honestly say I woke up one morning and set out to make something like this, I am pleased nonetheless..

Here's a remix I did for the Summer 2008 Olympics.. This got aired on some international radio stations, and played at some Olympic parties in Beijing.. Kinda cool to play out for a couple weeks every couple years!!

My rule of thumb for remixing is: Don't remix songs that don't need remixing!! This song is fine as is and really doesn't NEED a remix per se, I just wanted to present it from another angle.. For fun!! This is like pink panther sexified..

On a side note, BEAUTIFUL WOMEN are my inspiration.. Lately I have been fortunate to be surrounded by so many beautiful women that these remixes are coming one after another :] I think it was Voltaire who used to write books using the backs of naked women on all fours as tables.. Feelin that.. I think I might like to try that, or at least have some naked women just laying around.. Ladies get at me..

It was about 3am and I was getting ready to watch a movie on Netflix when this infomercial for some Motown collection came on.. The song that caught my ear was "If I Were Your Woman" by Gladys Knight & the Pips.. I started playing around with loops and drums, then I realized this would be a good remix for "Say Something", which I had been wanting to remix..

I love Timbaland, but some of his beats are just too space age for me, especially when he goes overboard with it on songs that have meaningful lyrics.. The beat on "Say Something" is a perfect example of this.. I think my remix changes the whole vibe of the song.. It captures the hurt and heartache, gives it more feeling, while maintaining the overall inspirational feeling..

DJ Ashton Martin asked me if I had a good club-friendly edit of this song because he had been looking for one for a while.. After some searching the internet for a decent edit with no luck, I decided to go ahead and put something together myself.. I tried to maintain the original vibe of the song while giving it a little more bounce and edge.. I think it turned out nice, I'll be trying it out this weekend..

Incidentally, I learned that an early 1973 version of this song with slightly different lyrics indicates the place the eagle wants to fly away from is a native american reservation.. Never knew that!! You can hear that version here:

"My mother God rest her soul, I just wanna fly" and "On my mama, on my hood, I look fly" and they say "fly" at the same time.. Same words, different context.. It's weird, kinda silly, and who else would think of it but me?? Have a good laugh, put it on your iPod, or whatever.. Remember that creativity is the opposite of competition.. If I had to assign parts, Basement Jaxx would have to be the slow roasted pork, Sinden the ham and swiss cheese, and Switch the pickles and mustard.. Throw that between some Cuban bread, butter the outside, flatten it to 1/3 it's original size in a hot press, and slice it diagonally for a taste you will never forget..
